Tōkyō & Ōsakaa family trip planner, built the honest way

AI drafted the first plan. We checked every yen of it against real flight, hotel and ticket sites, then rebuilt it for four people travelling in New Zealand's October school holidays.

Where we're going

Two cities, one unforgettable week

Japan is a chain of islands in East Asia, home to around 124 million people and a culture that pairs 1,400-year-old shrines with neon megacities. Our trip covers Tokyo, the world's most populous metro area and Japan's capital, and Osaka, its brasher, food-obsessed southern cousin two hours away by bullet train. It's spring-jacket weather in the New Zealand October holidays — Japan is heading into a mild, dry autumn, perfect for long days on foot between temples, arcades and conveyor-belt sushi counters.

The plan below started life as a single AI prompt. We treated that like a rough draft, not a booking — checking flights, hotel star ratings and ticket prices against real travel sites before building our own version for a family of four.

Fun facts about Japan

Good to know before you land

01

Shibuya Crossing is often called the world's busiest pedestrian crossing — up to roughly 3,000 people can cross at once when the lights change.

02

Osaka's nickname is tenka no daidokoro — "the nation's kitchen." It's the birthplace of takoyaki and okonomiyaki street food.

03

Japan has one of the highest densities of vending machines on Earth — hot coffee, cold drinks and even soup, on almost every block.

04

The Tokaido Shinkansen connecting Tokyo and Osaka cruises at around 285 km/h and is famous for arriving on time to the minute.

AI research vs. our research

Where the AI plan held up — and where it didn't

We asked AI to plan flights, transport, a hotel, food and two fun activities for a family of four. Then we fact-checked every line against Cheapflights, Rome2rio, Agoda, Trivago and official ticket sites.

CategoryAI ResearchOur Research
Flights AI
Auckland → Tokyo, 1 stop in Sydney. ~20 hours, ~$2,000pp — about $8,000 for 4 people. Didn't mention getting from the airport to the hotel.
Ours
Auckland → Tokyo with a stop in China, ~18 hours, $2,532pp — $10,127 for 4 (Cheapflights, AKL–TYO, 26 Sep–3 Oct 2026). More expensive than the AI's guess, but a real, bookable fare.
Other transport AI
Lots of trains for a multi-city route: Harajuku trains ~$10/family, Hakone trains $60–80, plus the Shinkansen Hakone → Kyoto → Osaka → Tokyo.
Ours
Narita Airport → MIMARU Tokyo Ikebukuro: train 58 min ($10–30), bus 2h6min ($39–41), or a private transfer ($75–100). Ubers, JR East, subways, local rail, buses and taxis all run in Tokyo and Osaka.
Accommodation AI
Different hotel in each city, no names given: Tokyo & Kyoto ~$250–300/night, a Hakone ryokan ~$420–520/night, Osaka ~$220–260/night.
Ours
MIMARU Tokyo Ikebukuro — 4★, 8.9/10 location, ~$524/night. Hotel Universal Port Vita, Osaka — 4★, 9.1/10, ~$334/night. Both named, bookable and rated.
Food AI
Ramen, sushi & more. Family breakfast $20–30, lunch $60–90, dinner $70–100 — no specific places named.
Ours
Real, per-person prices: 7-Eleven meal $11, supermarket food $7.40, a bowl of ramen $11, conveyor-belt sushi $21 — plus restaurants and convenience stores close to both hotels.
Fun activity 1 AI
Free/cheap sightseeing: Senso-ji, Meiji Shrine, Hakone, Fushimi Inari, Nara Park.
Ours
Tokyo Disneyland — $80–120pp, rides, parades and themed lands built for families with kids.
Fun activity 2 AI
Osaka Castle, Dotonbori, the Bamboo Grove and a Hakone onsen — plus backup plans if a spot was closed or crowded.
Ours
Universal Studios Japan, Osaka — $90–120pp for a full day of rides and shows; Express Passes cost extra for shorter queues.

Extra experiences worth building in

The AI plan's best idea was pairing big city days with slower, quieter ones. These three didn't make the final budget, but they're worth swapping in.

Bowl of ramen

A proper ramen stop

A sit-down ramen shop between sightseeing days — a warm, filling break that costs about the same as a supermarket meal.

~$11 pp
Conveyor belt sushi in Osaka

Conveyor-belt sushi night

Kaiten-zushi in Osaka is fast, cheap and genuinely fun for kids — pick plates straight off the belt as they pass.

~$21 pp
Shinkansen bullet train passing Mount Fuji

A window seat on the Shinkansen

The Tokyo–Osaka bullet train passes Mount Fuji on a clear day — worth booking a right-side window seat for.

AI critique

Was the AI plan actually useful?

🍃 What the AI got right

  • Built a full multi-city route (Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto, Osaka) in seconds, with mostly free or low-cost sightseeing like Senso-ji and Nara Park.
  • Suggested backup activities in case a shrine or attraction was closed or too crowded.
  • Its rough flight time and ballpark hotel pricing weren't far off reality, which made it a usable starting point.

🔴 Where it fell short

  • Quoted an Auckland–Tokyo flight via Sydney at ~$2,000pp; the real fare we found (via China) was $2,532pp — about $2,127 more for a family of four.
  • Named no actual hotels, so there was nothing to book or compare star ratings and location scores against.
  • Its food budget ($60–100 per meal for the family) was well above the $7–21 per-person options we actually priced.

🟡 What it missed entirely

  • No airport-to-hotel breakdown — we had to work out the train, bus and transfer options ourselves.
  • No mention of ticket costs for Tokyo Disneyland or Universal Studios Japan Express Passes.
  • Didn't flag that October is peak season for tourist crowds at shrines like Fushimi Inari.

✅ Would we recommend this trip?

Yes. Tokyo and Osaka suit a family of four well within the NZ October holidays, and with our corrections the whole week comes in at $16,192.41 against a $20,000 budget — leaving room to spare.

Sites used to check the AI's numbers

How we got here

  • Started with a plain AI prompt for a 4-person Japan holiday under $20,000 NZD.
  • Refined it to fit the NZ October school holidays, ask for a full cost breakdown, and account for closures, crowding and indirect flights.
  • Asked for more food and activity options so the plan could flex to what the family actually likes.
  • Fact-checked flights, transport, the hotel and both fun activities against the sites on the left before finalising the budget.
